Specific rig requirements

The aim is to create a complete and totally different rig using lead-core, an “in line" lead, and a braided hook-rig tied to a hook with ring, where we can place any sinker or floating hook bait. The main requirement of the assembly is to get us bites from the very suspicious and scared Carp (…from Rainbow Lake for example). Where anglers use very short hook link to get a quick and efficient hook or where the fish are very suspicious because the lead is placed very near to the hookbait on a hard bed.

The Key of this rig

This is a semi-fixed rig, with an auto hooked system, which seamlessly respects the security protocols for fish hooking or in the case of a main line breakage problem. The main novelty and difference is that the lead, always in line can be round or square type, will be placed in the middle point of the lead core total length, not at the end as in conventional assemblies. Now the order of the elements is different: Firstly the hook, second the braid line, then the swivel, the rigid lead core, the lead and more lead core.

Look at the reverse position of the "in line” leads.

Although it may seem strange now, we will use these leads placed opposite of how they were originally designed, you will see why. The distance from lead to the junction to the main line is 50 cm the same as any rig made with lead core. Another difference with respect to other usual Carp fishing rigs, and the great novelty, is the use of wire, which really brings performance and effectiveness to this new rig system. Now, ahead of the lead, 25-30 cm of lead core is completely rigid because the core of lead was replaced by the steel wire, joined to this by a swivel this section will now be totally rigid. The result is a totally stiff rig system, very good match to the bed, and presents the bait nearly to 50 cm away from the lead. This would be impossible without this revolutionary rig system. As always without any reduction of the effectiveness in the hooking action.

Materials required:

  • Lead Core 40-50 lb.
  • Steal wire
  • Nº. 8 (Standard Swivel, Quick Change Ring Swivel or Swivel)
  • Silicone cones and anti tangle Sleeves (long and short)
  • Micro rig rings (in appropriate size and shape)
  • Silicone Sleeve
  • 3 oz aprox. in line leads are essential.
  • Korda Arma Kord 50 lb braid line (or similar)
  • Nash Fang Micro Hook Barb (or similar).

Tools:

Pliers, Lead core needle, long needle, scissors

Manufacture, assembly steps:

1. Cut about 75-80 cm of Lead core. Removed the lead wire from inside a stretch about 40 cm.

2. Cut with pliers a piece of steel wire or piano wire of 35-40 cm. The wire should be completely straight with no curves. This is important.

3. We put the wire through the hollow end of the core to lead careful not to damage the braid fibers. We introduce to spare, leaving the last 5 cm of lead core without wire.

4. With this 5 cm of braid we knot to a swivel, and drag the wire inside to the knot by pulling back the fingers of the braided sheath.

5. With a long needle passed the lead core to introduce the following elements. Always in this order: short anti tangle sleeve, the lead in the opposite position, another long anti tangle sleeve, and a piece of silicone sheath to protect the swivel knot.

6. We stop the inner wire from contacting the swivel knot and adjust the silicone protector to secure and provide rigidity.

7. Place tight silicone cones at both ends of the lead, setting this to about 25-30 cm. from the swivel.

8. Adjust the end point of the wire and lead wire begins. If everything are well, there will be at least 5 cm of wire sticking out of the lead.

9. We turn the lead just after the wire to get a minimum of 45º angle and tie the core to lead the main line with some of the specific and usual knots.

10. Now there is only the braided hook rig pending. We tie a ring to the end of the braid, adjust the distance and tie the hook with the knotless knot.

11. Protect and adjust the hook with a silicone tube.

12. We tie the braid to the swivel at the desired length. It can range from a few centimeters to 25 cm. maximum, and with this we will have our stiff rig ready to fish.

It is really easy for everyone to make this rig according to the pictures below:

There should be at least 5 cm of wire sticking out of the lead, and bend it to get a minimum of 45º angle

We tie the braid to a quick change or a simply swivel

View from the main line ...

... and from the hook and the baits

It is possible to use differnt kind of hook lengths according to the circumstances

What knot do we use when we need a very low-profile, lead as far away as possible from the bait, and getting the same efficiency that you would if you used a very short rig...?

The rig that I have created is based on the stiffness that comes from the use of the steel utilized to lengthen the distance to the lead. Furthermore, and in spite the use of Lead core, often the rigs in hard-beds are not stiff or a good match to the bed, thereby raising the suspicions of the Carp. This doesn’t happen now because the rigidity of the steel in the lead core and the inverted lead placement in the middle means that the rig remains completely stuck to the bottom in all circumstances. The rigid section of lead core situated just before the lead, prolongs the action of it effectively, and when the fish bites the end of the rig, due to the resistance that gives rigidity, the fish is automatically hooked as if the lead was under the fishes head. If the weight of lead is small, with 2 or 3oz sufficient, bend the wire end after the lead causing you to turn round the wire and it will always make it stick to the bottom. The inverted position of the lead forces the tip of the stiff lead core to the bottom. By leaving the mount by boat, the baited hook is always fully away from lead. The bait is a never above the lead.

This new rig is ideal for fishing tactics using large PVA bags, throwing them from the swim in the margins or depositing them with the aid of a boat. The bag will set up always away from the lead, and also the bag fixation on the swivel is excellent and easiest.

Simulated PVA bag

The Carp was hooked, the effectiveness of this rig is without doubt ...

... and gives us Carp like this, inhabitants of mythical places, caught at Rainbow Lake in France, probably one of the most pressured lakes in Europe.
